Mencius 7B.16: benevolence is what is human

Mencius compresses benevolence into the shortest definition: it is not an optional decoration added to the human, but part of what makes the human human.

孟子曰：「仁也者，人也；合而言之，道也。」

mèng zǐ yuē：「rén yě zhě， rén yě； hé ér yán zhī， dào yě。」

Mencius said, 'Benevolence is the distinguishing characteristic of man. As embodied in man's conduct, it is called the path of duty.'
